FAQ

What are your office hours?
It depends on the day! I offer session options during business hours, evenings, and weekends.
Where are your sessions?
We conduct ALL our sessions online. We use Zoom for our video platform, integrated with our online scheduling system, ensuring secure and straightforward access.
How do I pay?
We accept payments via credit card through Square and Venmo.
Do you take insurance?

While health insurance plans cover some of our work, Evolve Speech does not work with insurance companies. There are several reasons why we don’t take insurance.

Insurance plans usually only offer a certain number of sessions per year (often only 20). I let the needs of each client drive therapeutic planning rather than number crunchers at the insurance company.

Insurance plans often require high deductibles, meaning that clients may have to spend thousands of dollars before the insurance coverage pays.

There are limitations on the types of communication diagnoses covered by the insurance. For example, some insurances may only cover an issue that occurred due to an accident or illness but will NOT cover anything that may be developmental or congenital.

Upon request, I provide superbills for clients. You can send these to the insurance company so that you can get credit for your annual out-of-pocket expense.

Evolve Speech Therapy accepts FSA or HSA cards for our services.

If you want to talk numbers, give us a call, and we can review your insurance plan with you to determine the best fit for you and your family.

How do I make an appointment?

I always recommend that you book a free 15-minute consultation to come up with a plan together.

We can book your first session during that consultation, and you will also receive access to our online scheduler for future sessions. Click here to schedule your free consultation.

What is your cancellation policy?
I require clients to maintain at least an 80% attendance rate to keep their slot. I also understand that life happens. If you must cancel, we ask for as much notice as possible. Since communication is my favorite thing, I ask for open communication for all scheduling issues. We will charge you for any “no-show” appointments for the full session rate.
What is the best way to get in touch with you?

If you’re interested but have more questions, please schedule a free 15-minute consultation. You can also always email us at info@evolvespeech.com.

What is a free initial phone consultation?

It is a 15-minute opportunity to chat about your communication goals and see if we are a good fit for your needs.

How long is a typical session?
Most sessions are 45 minutes, once per week.
How long will this process take?
The answer depends on a few things. These include your goals, time to practice outside of our sessions, and how your brain processes the info. But, in general, the people who take the plan seriously and practice regularly are usually the ones who see the most progress.
Are there specific locations where you can work?
Yes! Currently, we work with clients in AZ, CA, CO, GA, and UT. We also work with accent training clients in NC. If you do NOT live in one of these states, please contact us, as we are constantly growing our coverage list.
With what age range do you work?
Evolve Speech works with children, teens, and adults.
Are you LGBTQIA friendly?
Of course!
Do you work with people from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, and religions?
Definitely, and often! Our clients come from a large variety of countries and backgrounds.
What can I expect in the first session?
Before the first session, you will fill out intake paperwork and record yourself. At the beginning of your first session, we will review your areas of concern, along with ones we think should be addressed. Then we will take it from there!
Do your clients receive assignments to work on between sessions?
Yes! We try to create functional and straightforward “homework” assignments to help carry over your new skills into your daily life. The clients who take the plan seriously and practice regularly usually see the fastest progress.
How will you get my pre-teen/teenager to engage in the session?
This age group is one of my favorites! I try to find what they think is interesting and address their communication concerns (which may be a little different from their parents’ concerns). I identify what they find interesting and important and use that in therapy. Think YouTube, video games, sports, etc.
What, exactly, is an accent?

What a great question! The answer is a little complicated, but a general answer is that an accent occurs when a person produces specific speech components of a language differently than other speakers of that language.

I don’t want my accent to go away – I need people to understand me more easily.

Then this is the place for you! We will teach your brain to make the necessary adjustments only when you want them.

People everywhere do “code-switching” in their lives – speaking differently in different situations. For example, we speak differently to a newborn than to a supervisor. Accent training gives you the tools to produce the style of speech you want when you want it.

The idea of public speaking makes me physically feel ill – is there any hope for me?
Definitely, yes! Professional speaking is a skill, just like riding a bike. We can help you focus on specific skills to feel and look more confident. Then, we will work on different levels of practice to prepare you for the big presentation, interview, or new position.
How long have you been in practice?
Evolve Speech has been open since 2018. Heather has been a practicing speech-language pathologist since 2006.
What are your strengths as a therapist?
I like to say I put the “fun” in functional. We will work hard, we will laugh, and we will make progress. Homework assignments will connect to situations in your real-life whenever possible.
What if I think what we’re doing in a session is weird?
This issue might happen, and that’s ok. I use a whole variety of strategies to get the right sound. Some of our “funny” sounds are more for warm-ups and getting the brain accustomed to new sounds or motions. If something ever feels too weird, you can always stop and ask me about it. Often the explanation makes everything make sense, and therefore feel less weird.
What is the answer?
Of course, 42!
How would people describe you?
People might describe me with words like quirky, fun, and efficient. And all these come out during my sessions!
Cake or pie?
Tough choice! I’d have to say pie. We celebrate Pi Day (March 14) with too many pies in my family, and it is glorious!
